Off-Campus housing resources
Student Legal Services aids Ohio State students as they transition to moving and living off-campus.
Lease reviews
Students living off-campus must be educated consumers. SLS provides lease reviews to students and will explain their rights and responsibilities under Ohio law.
Getting repairs
Tenants should notify their landlords, in writing, about necessary repairs and keep a copy for their records. If repairs are not made, students should schedule an appointment with SLS.
Security deposits
Students can take steps to get their security deposit back from the landlord. If students do not receive their security deposit, or get less than they are owed, they should schedule an appointment with SLS.
Renter's insurance
SLS highly encourages students to purchase renter’s insurance. Generally, your landlord’s insurance does not cover damage to your personal property. Follow the link for more information and a list of local insurance agents.
Roommates
Most leases in Columbus contain a clause that makes all roommates responsible if even one roommate does not pay rent or causes damages. Students should sign a roommate agreement to outline their rights and responsibilities.
Subleasing
If you are subleasing your place, or planning to sublease from someone else, you should schedule with SLS to get a sublease agreement and learn about your rights and responsibilities.
